The Caldera Story

2017

Caldera is founded by James Macnaghten and Guy Winstanley to pave the way for sustainable and affordable energy storage. Despite the technology being in its infancy, we’re convinced of the untapped potential of thermal energy storage.

2018

We’re the first in the world to create a sustainable heat storage material using volcanic rocks and recycled aluminium. We set up a test rig to prove we can now store and produce clean heat with high efficiency.

2019

We invent our vacuum insulation and heat extraction systems. And combine our newly developed technologies in a 100kWh domestic prototype – the Warmstone heat battery.

2020

We’re thrilled to fit the first Warmstone in our CEO’s home. We show our technology is a safe and reliable solution to provide heat using 100% sustainable energy.

2021

Our crowdfunding campaign is a big success – 1,300 people invest on CrowdCube, raising £1,520,000 and exceeding our goal by 250%. Caldera is featured in The Times and on BBC TV. Warmstone is installed in ten households and a church to provide 24/7 clean heat.

2022

Winning multiple grants, we’re awarded a total of £800,000 in UK government funding to achieve our technology’s full potential. We begin to develop our first full-scale industrial product.
