What Dutch sites keep asking us about electrifying steam

If your site raises steam from gas and the grid connection is what's standing in the way, come and find us at Industrial Heat & Power in Den Bosch, stand 2.B055, from 6 to 8 October.

Find us on stand 2.B055

Industrial Heat & Power runs from 6 to 8 October at the Brabanthallen in Den Bosch, and we'll be on stand 2.B055, next to our investor GEA Group.

Andy Joynson and Dr Krishan Chana will be on the stand for all three days. Email sales@caldera.co.uk to book a time or to ask for a free visitor pass.

The question that comes up first

Most sites we talk to have already decided that electrifying process heat is where they're heading. What stops them is rarely the boiler.

A direct electric boiler draws its full rated power the moment the process asks for steam, so the grid connection, transformers and switchgear behind it all have to be sized for the biggest steam demand the site ever has, not the average. On many Dutch sites that means a connection upgrade, and with grid congestion as it is in the Netherlands, those upgrades are slow and in some places not available at all.

That's usually where a good project stalls.

What changes when the storage is inside the boiler

A Caldera Storage Boiler is an electric boiler with thermal storage and controls built in. Because charging and discharging are decoupled, the electrical side and the steam side no longer have to move in step.

  • The Heat Cells charge steadily and the stored heat covers the peaks, so your import is sized to average demand rather than peak steam demand.
  • The controls only charge within the headroom your existing connection has spare, so many sites can start without waiting for an upgrade.
  • Your highest import becomes a figure you set, rather than one the process imposes.
  • It delivers saturated steam at up to 16 barg (204°C), over 95% dry, with 94% round-trip efficiency and a discharge response of under 60 seconds.
  • It integrates directly with your existing steam plant and runs alongside your current boilers, so you can turn a gas boiler down rather than switch it off.

If you're preparing an SDE++ application

The 2026 SDE++ round opens on 27 October. If electrifying process heat is part of your bid, the shape of the project matters as much as the technology: what you're asking the subsidy to cover, how much of your heat demand you can really move, and whether the grid connection assumption behind your numbers holds up.

Bring your steam demand to the stand and we'll talk through how a Storage Boiler would fit. We'd rather look at your load shape than make general claims about it.

Which Dutch sites it suits

Food and beverage sites are batch and shift-patterned, with predictable cycles that suit scheduled charging. Brewing and distilling have the highest peak-to-average ratio of any sector we work with, so that's where the infrastructure saving is largest.

Dairy and food processing sites that belong to multi-site groups are worth a look for a different reason: a design that works at one site can usually be repeated at the others.

Agri-food sites outside the main industrial clusters are often where grid constraints bite hardest, which is exactly where sizing import to average rather than peak is worth the most.

Bring twelve months of data

Whether this works on your site depends on your load shape and your tariff, so we'll model it on your numbers. Send us twelve months of half-hourly demand data and we'll simulate a Storage Boiler across all 8,760 hours of a year against real price signals, then take you through the results.

Or come and find us on stand 2.B055 from 6 to 8 October.

About this analysis

GEA Group is an investor in Caldera. The SDE++ 2026 opening date of 27 October is the date published by RVO.

The description of Dutch grid congestion is a general one rather than a quantified claim, so we haven't attached a figure to it.

The product specifications are Caldera's published figures. Caldera's industrial-scale demonstrator at Fareham has met its targets every year since 2024.
