Leaving Fossil Fuels Behind

BBC Radio 4's "Rare Earth" programme includes a visit to the Caldera factory and discussions about how to decarbonise industrial heat affordably.

The BBC Radio 4 Rare Earth team visited Caldera. The Caldera interview is at minute 27 and is 10 minutes long.

We showed presenter Tom Heap and producor Toby Field around: from manufacturing and assembly through to our full scale demonstrator. We spoke a lot about one of the biggest industrial challenges hiding in plain sight: how to decarbonise steam and industrial heat affordably, at scale, and without asking industry to simply 'use less'. A lot of the conversation focused on the reality facing industry right now, in the UK and beyond: grid constraints, volatile energy prices, peaky demand profiles and the sheer practical challenge of electrifying processes that were built around gas. That is exactly the problem we are trying to solve at Caldera with our electric Storage Boiler - using thermal storage to turn low cost renewable electricity into high temperature industrial heat and steam when sites actually need it. There is still a huge amount to do, but it increasingly feels like industrial heat is finally moving from 'interesting future idea' to something tangible and deployable.
